A Fertility Referral Session is a 45-minute online consultation offered via GenderGP's partner network. During this session, you'll:
Discuss fertility preservation options (e.g. freezing eggs or sperm)
Receive a referral letter for storing your gametes (eggs or sperm), which you can use at a private fertility clinic
Explore the pros, cons, and practicalities of each option
This session aims to support individuals considering gender-affirming care to retain future reproductive possibilities.
You can book a Fertility Referral Session here.
Why Consider Fertility Preservation?
Because certain gender-affirming treatments or surgeries may reduce or eliminate fertility, it is important to consider preservation before you start. Some key points:
Hormone therapies (e.g. oestrogen, testosterone) may affect fertility long term.
Surgeries involving removal or alteration of reproductive organs (e.g. hysterectomy, gonadectomy) cause permanent infertility.
Preserving gametes ahead of treatment gives you more potential pathways to biological parenthood later
Eligibility and Who It's For
This session is primarily targeted to transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse individuals who:
Are considering or planning to start hormone treatment (HRT)
Are planning gender-affirming surgeries affecting reproductive organs
Want clarity on how their transition path may impact fertility
Wish to preserve their option for biological children in the future
Because the session is done online via Google Meet, it offers privacy and convenience.
What Happens During the Session?
Here's what typically takes place:
Introduction and Assessment
The specialist partner will ask about your reproductive goals, medical history, and transition plans.Education and Discussion
You'll learn about available fertility preservation methods (egg freezing, sperm freezing), their processes, risks, costs, and success rates.Referral Letter Creation
If suitable, the specialist will write a personalised referral letter, which you can present to a fertility clinic to initiate storage of gametes.
Cost and Booking
The Fertility Referral Session costs £110 (GBP).
Important Considerations and Limitations
GenderGP does not directly carry out the fertility procedures. The session is consultative and referral-based only.
You must choose a private fertility clinic to carry out gamete extraction and storage.
Some procedures (e.g. egg retrieval) may require hormonal stimulation or pausing certain treatments momentarily.
There are risks, costs, and no guarantee of future success.
Psychological and emotional support may be needed, as fertility discussions can evoke strong feelings.
