What is Misgendering?

Misgendering occurs when someone is referred to using language that doesn't align with their gender identity. This might be unintentional or deliberate. Common examples include:

  • Pronoun misuse: Using wrong pronouns (e.g., calling someone 'he/him' when they use 'she/her' or 'they/them').
  • Name misuse (deadnaming): Using a birth or former name rather than the individual's chosen name.
  • Gendered language: Addressing someone with inappropriate terms like 'sir' or 'madam,' or mislabelling mixed groups with binary terms.
  • Document misrepresentation: Official forms, records, or communications that fail to reflect someone's true gender identity.
  • Assumption-based interactions: Inferring gender based on appearance, voice, or other stereotypes.

Understanding misgendering is fundamental to fostering inclusive environments where transgender and gender-diverse individuals are seen, respected, and affirmed
