Glossary: MTF and Transfeminine Identity

Transfeminine/Trans fem: Broad umbrella term for AMAB individuals who identify more with femininity than masculinity. Includes trans women, feminine nonbinary, demigirls, and others

MTF: Abbreviation for 'male-to-female.' Refers specifically to trans women who transition from male to female, often used in medical settings.


Trans Woman: A person assigned male at birth who identifies and lives as a woman. A subset within the transfeminine spectrum.


AFAB / AMAB: Assigned Female/Male At Birth – neutral ways to describe birth-assigned sex.


Nonbinary: (feminine identity)Individuals assigned male at birth who aren't strictly female but express feminine identity – encompassed under transfeminine.


Enby: A slang term for nonbinary people.


DemigirlA person partially identifying with femininity – within transfeminine identity for some AMAB individuals.


Gender-affirming care: Medical and psychological support in transition, including hormone therapy (oestrogen, anti-androgens), surgeries, counselling, etc. often involved in MTF journeys.


Gender Dysphoria: Distress that can occur when gender identity and assigned sex do not align; not experienced by all trans people.
