What is the role of an Advisor/Counsellor listed on the Health and Wellbeing Directory in assessing someone for gender-affirming treatment?

The Advisor/Counsellor's role is to assess whether an individual meets the criteria for gender incongruence as outlined by the ICD-11 and to evaluate their capacity to give informed consent for their chosen medication. This includes making sure the person understands the benefits, risks, and implications of the treatment.

If the Advisor/Counsellor is unable to confidently assess either the diagnosis of gender incongruence or the person’s capacity to consent, the individual will not be able to access GenderGP’s Treatment Recommendations at that time. In such cases, a consultation with a doctor will be required to prescribe the appropriate medication.

However, if the individual’s understanding of the medication improves in the future, they can undergo another assessment (Capacity to Consent Session) with a Counsellor to potentially access GenderGP’s self-served Treatment Recommendations at a later stage.
