What blood tests will I need to have?
If you're over 40, you should have a general health check periodically anyway, just to make sure things like your cholesterol and blood count are okay (but this is for everyone, not just because you are going through hormone therapy).
The specific blood tests you will need for gender-affirming care depend on what medication choices you make. Here are some general rules:
- If you're taking testosterone, you need to check your haematocrit (the size of your red blood cells; part of a full blood count).
- If you're taking spironolactone, you need to keep an eye on your potassium levels.
- If you're taking cyproterone, you need to monitor your liver enzymes.
Of course, we also need to check your hormone levels to make sure you're on enough hormones or blockers (and that you're not exceeding a safe hormone level).
Note: To use the finger prick test, you need to be 16 or older and not taking spironolactone. Vitall, the service provider, will send your blood test results directly to your email address.
If you're taking spironolactone, you'll need an intravenous blood sample. You can get this through an online blood test service of your choosing, through your GP if they're willing to help, or at a private clinic/hospital.
