Blood Pressure Reference Ranges

Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against your artery walls. It’s measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and written as two numbers — for example, 120/80 mmHg.

  • Systolic pressure (top number): the pressure when your heart beats.

  • Diastolic pressure (bottom number): the pressure when your heart rests between beats.

Blood Pressure and Gender-Affirming Care

Some factors related to gender-affirming care can influence blood pressure:

  • Hormone therapy: Oestrogen or testosterone may cause slight changes in blood pressure.

  • Binding, tucking, or packing: These practices can sometimes increase physical stress on your body so it can be helpful to take breaks.

  • Mental health and stress: Stress can affect blood pressure. Accessing supportive, affirming care and mental health resources can make a real difference.

Lifestyle Suggestions for Healthy Blood Pressure

  • Try to eat a balanced diet.

  • Try to stay active.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Limit alcohol and avoid smoking.

  • Manage stress and get enough sleep.

  • Take your medications (including hormones) exactly as prescribed.

When to See Your Doctor

Contact your healthcare provider if your readings are:

  • Below 90/60 mmHg and you feel faint, dizzy, or weak.

  • Above 130/80 mmHg on multiple readings.

  • If you experience chest pain, headaches, shortness of breath, or vision changes.
