I don't want a label, I just want to be me

In today's world, labels are often used to explain gender and sexuality. They can help with communication and building community, not everyone feels comfortable with them. Many people simply want to be seen for who they are without limits or assumptions.

The Limits of Labels

  • Restrictive: Labels can push people into categories that don't reflect their full experience.

  • Oversimplified: Identity is complex and fluid; labels rarely capture all of it.

  • Expectations: Labels can bring stereotypes and pressure to conform.

Celebrating Individuality

  • Personal Identity: Focus on people's unique qualities and experiences, not just labels.

  • Self-Definition: Everyone has the right to choose how (or if) they label themselves.

  • Open Dialogue: Talking about labels helps build understanding and acceptance.

How to Support

  • Ask Preferences: Respect how someone wants to be identified.

  • Learn & Educate: Understand that not everyone uses labels, and share this knowledge with others.

  • Be Inclusive: Create spaces, policies, and conversations that support all forms of identity expression.

Some people don't feel labels represent them. Respecting their choice to simply 'be themselves' fosters authenticity, diversity, and acceptance.
