Using Correct Pronouns in Nursery Settings

Respecting pronouns is about dignity and inclusion. When we use the right pronouns, colleagues feel valued and children see positive role models. Misgendering can cause emotional harm, confuse children about what respect looks like, and undermine a colleague's authority in front of their group.

Supporting Each Other

Use the pronouns your colleague shares with you. If you're unsure, it's fine to ask politely. If you slip up, simply correct yourself and move on.

When you hear someone else misgender a colleague, gently correct it. Doing this calmly, even in front of children, shows them that respect matters.

If a colleague is misgendered, check in with them privately to see how they'd like to handle it. Nurseries should also provide clear policies, regular training, and simple ways to report concerns so staff feel safe and supported.

Setting the Example

Children copy what adults do. By consistently using the right pronouns and treating each other with respect, staff teach children the importance of inclusion from an early age.

Correct pronouns are a small detail that make a big difference – to colleagues' wellbeing, to workplace culture, and to the lessons children learn about respect.
