Glossary: FTM and Trans Masculine Identity

FTM (Female-to-Male): Refers to someone who transitions from female to male. Still used in some clinical contexts.


Trans Man: A person who was assigned female at birth and identifies as a man. This is the preferred and more affirming term.


AFAB / AMAB: Assigned Female/Male At Birth – neutral ways to describe birth-assigned sex.


Transmasculine/Trans masc: A broader umbrella for people who identify more with masculinity, including some non-binary people.


Cisgender: Someone whose gender identity aligns with their assigned sex at birth.


Nonbinary: A gender identity that doesn’t fit within the male/female binary.


Enby: A slang term for nonbinary people.


Gender-affirming care: Medical and psychological support in transition, including hormone therapy (oestrogen, anti-androgens), surgeries, counselling, etc. often involved in MTF journeys.


Gender Dysphoria: Distress that can occur when gender identity and assigned sex do not align; not experienced by all trans people.
