Dispensing Quantities and the Realities of Electronic Prescriptions

When it comes to dispensing medications, particularly through electronic prescription systems, one thing is clear: you can’t please everyone, all the time. What one pharmacist might accept without hesitation, another might scrutinise, and this can lead to some confusion for patients.

A common question we hear is, “Is there a difference between supplying nine 28-tablet packs versus three 84-tablet packs?” The short answer: it depends on the pharmacist and the dispensing software they use.

Understanding Electronic Prescription Software

Most modern healthcare systems rely on electronic prescription software, which makes it easier for prescribers to send prescriptions directly to pharmacies. The system allows doctors and pharmacists to keep track of patients’ medication history and ensure everything aligns with clinical guidelines.

However, not all electronic prescription systems are the same, and this can sometimes lead to discrepancies in how prescriptions are interpreted. Some pharmacists may prefer dispensing smaller packs, like 28 tablets at a time, while others might be comfortable with larger quantities, such as 84 tablets. While the difference in tablet count doesn’t affect the total amount dispensed, the presentation of the prescription can lead to different decisions being made.

You Can’t Please Everyone

At the end of the day, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to dispensing quantities. While electronic prescription software makes the process smoother and more efficient, human factors—like the pharmacist’s professional judgment and local rules—still play a significant role in the final outcome.

If you run into issues with a prescription being accepted or rejected by one pharmacy, don’t panic. It doesn’t mean your prescription is invalid. You might just need to visit another pharmacy, or consult with a doctor to request a bespoke prescription to adjust the format or quantities being prescribed.
